An Island Christmas

Summary: Rosie's preparations for Christmas on the island of Trinidad include picking red petals for the sorrel drink, mixing up the black currant cake, and singing along with the parang band.  Rosie and her brother, Ragboy, also make presents for their parents, decorate a guava branch for a Christmas tree, and anxiously wait for Christmas day to arrive to see what is under their tree.
Reviews:

Joyful activity in freely painted watercolors that beautifully evoke the island setting and vibrant, warmhearted characters. A welcome contribution. Kirkus Reviews

We were living in New York and my son Jared was celebrating his first Christmas.  I was inspired to write this book as I recalled the warm sunshine and goodies of my own childhood Christmases in Trinidad.  I remembered the big, guava branch that we used to paint white with shoe polish to decorate for Christmas and the bright red poinsettia plants blooming in our yard.  My second child, Brandt, was seven months old when he celebrated his first Christmas in Trinidad surrounded by guava trees, hot sunshine, sea and sand.
